We drive up the slopes of Irazú, the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, to a crater that on a clear morning shows you both the Atlantic and the Pacific.
On the way down we stop at the Basilica of the Virgin of the Angels in Cartago, walk Lankester Gardens with the University of Costa Rica's collection of orchids and bromeliads, and finish in the Orosi Valley with one of the country's few colonial churches and a home-style lunch.
